What Are Metal Braces?

Metal braces are orthodontic devices made of stainless steel that are used to align teeth and correct bite issues. These consist of three main parts:

  • Brackets – attached to each tooth with a special adhesive
  • Archwires – wires threaded through the brackets; these apply pressure to the teeth.
  • Elastics  – these are used to hold the archwires in place.

How Do Metal Braces Work?

Metal braces apply continuous pressure to the teeth, which gradually shifts them into the desired position. We’ll adjust the archwires periodically to ensure that your child’s teeth are moving in the right direction. We’ll change the elastics regularly to maintain the proper tension.

The braces can correct a variety of issues, including overcrowding, gaps, overbite, underbite, and crossbite. The length of treatment depends on the severity of the issue and can take anywhere from 12-18 months.

Fitting Your Child’s Braces

The fitting process usually takes between one and two hours. Dr. Salles or Dr. Vodrey will clean and dry your child’s teeth, then apply a special adhesive to each tooth where a bracket will be placed.

The brackets attach to each tooth, and we thread the archwires through the brackets. Then, we’ll apply elastics to keep the archwires in place.

It’s normal for your child to experience some discomfort and soreness for the first few days. We’ll provide you and your child with instructions on how to care for their braces and how to manage initial discomfort.

Benefits of Modern Braces

Modern metal braces are much more comfortable and less noticeable than they used to be. The brackets are smaller and smoother, which makes them less likely to irritate your child’s mouth.

The archwires are also made of a special alloy that requires fewer adjustments and speeds up treatment time. Your kids have it much easier than we did as children!

The Cutting-edge of Orthodontic Treatment

Topsmiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is proud to offer self-ligating braces, the updated orthodontic treatment that’s gaining popularity across the world for its efficiency and comfort.

We're excited to share how these amazing developments in orthodontic technology work and their many benefits to parents and patients.

What Are Self-ligating Braces?

Self-ligating braces use a specialized bracket system to straighten teeth. These brackets are different from traditional braces in that they do not require elastic bands or metal ties to hold the wire in place.

Instead, self-ligating braces use a small, sliding door mechanism to hold the wire, allowing for greater freedom of movement and faster treatment times.

How Do Self-ligating Braces Work?

Self-ligating braces use a bracket system that allows for greater control over the movement of the teeth. The brackets have a small, sliding door mechanism that holds the wire in place. This means less friction and less pressure on your child’s teeth.

This means more comfort for your child and faster treatment times.

Another benefit of self-ligating braces is that they require fewer adjustments than traditional braces. This is because the brackets are designed to move teeth more gradually and with less force.

This means fewer visits, less time, and more money saved.

What Are the Benefits of Self-ligating Braces?

One of the main benefits of self-ligating braces is that they are more comfortable than traditional braces. Because there are no elastic bands or metal ties, there is less friction and pressure on the teeth, making them more comfortable to wear.

Patients with self-ligating braces also report fewer sores and discomfort in the mouth.

Self-ligating braces also offer greater control over the movement of the teeth. This means that treatment times can be shorter, and patients may need fewer adjustments. Self-ligating braces can also help to reduce the amount of time that patients need to wear braces overall.

How Long Do Self-ligating Braces Last?

Your child’s treatment time will depend on their individual needs and the severity of their orthodontic issues. Luckily, self-ligating braces typically require less time to achieve the desired results than traditional braces.

Patients with self-ligating braces can expect to wear them for anywhere from six months to two years, depending on their specific needs.

At Topsmiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer self-ligating braces as an advanced orthodontic treatment option for our patients.
